Middle ear infection (otitis media) is a very common illnesses in children. Young children may not be able to verbalize that they have ear pain. Some common symptoms of ear infection may include complaints of pain in one or both ears (earache), tugging or pulling at the ears, crying more than usual, trouble sleeping, failing to respond to sounds, irritability, fever, fluid drainage from the ears, and headaches.

Causes.

Ear infections commonly begin with a viral infection. The middle ear lining becomes swollen swollen because of the infection and fluid builds up behind the tympanic membrane.

Complications.

Chronic ear infections may lead to hearing loss or a ruptured eardrum. If left untreated, an ear infection may lead to a sinus infection or infection in other areas of the head.
