Description.
Tinnitus is defined as ringing or swishing type of noise in one or both ears. Some patients describe tinnitus as ringing, buzzing, roaring, clicking, whistling or hissing. This phantom noise may be high or low pitched. The sound can interfere with the ability to concentrate or hear and it may come and go.
Causes.
A number of health conditions may cause tinnitus. A common cause is ear cell damage. Other causes may include aging, exposure to loud noise, earwax blockage, abnormal bone growth, Meniere’s disease, head or neck injury, acoustic neuroma, head or neck tumor, atherosclerosis or high blood pressure.
