Description.
Asthma refers to chronic inflammation and swelling of the bronchial tubes causing wheezing and difficulty breathing. Other symptoms include coughing, shortness of breath, tightness of the chest, cyanosis, rapid pulse, and even nausea and chest pain.
Causes.
The direct cause of asthma is not known. The trigger of asthma symptoms varies from person to person. When the airway comes in contact with the asthma trigger, the airway becomes inflamed, narrow and filled with mucus. It is common for people with asthma to have allergies to airborne substances such as tree, grass, and weed pollens; mold; animal dander; dust mites; and cockroach particles.
The fundamental cause of asthma is the presence of phlegm. In Oriental Medicine, the passage of water is controlled by three organs, namely Lung, Spleen and Kidney. Imbalance of Yin and Yang in any of these three organs may lead to stagnation of the water circulation, which then contributes to the production and storage of phlegm in the Lung. Storage of phlegm in the Lung becomes the main cause for recurrent asthma attacks.
Complications.
Asthma may be fatal at times. Attacks can last for several minutes and lead to severe organ damage due to lack of oxygen. Asthma patients should follow the advice of their medical doctor and use the necessary medication to counteract an attack.
