Description.

Balance disturbance refers to a disturbance in equilibrium and can also be termed as vertigo, dizziness, light headedness, and feeling faint.

Causes.

Balance disturbances usually result from a disturbance in the middle ear, brain or nervous system. The labyrinth (semicircular canal) has the role of detecting body motion. Input from the labyrinth interacts with other systems of the body such as vision and proprioception to maintain the body’s position. Other causes for balance disturbance include infection, lack of blood circulation to the brain and musculoskeletal injuries.

Complications.

A balance disorder may be a sign of other important medical problems.
